Toshiba's Responsibility to the World

Protecting the environment is one of Toshiba's missions, and we have four primary goals towards Sustainable development:

Zero emission of waste

• We achieved this for the first time in fiscal year 2002, 18 months earlier than planned

Reduction in chemical substances

• In March 2005, we hope to become the first Japanese manufacturer of electrical machinery to ban harmful chemical substances in all our products, one year earlier than dictated by new regulations from China and the EU

Reduction in carbon dioxide emissions

• In June 2003, we developed a ceramic material able to absorb 400 times its own volume of CO2 at an unmatched rate at room temperature
• By 2010 we aim to have cut emissions by 25% since 1990

Environmentally conscious products

• Individuals at Toshiba are trained to fully understand the environmental impact of a product from purchasing materials through to its recycling. Our e-blue™ decolourable toner and erasing machine, commercialised in December 2003, allows companies to re-use paper in a cost-effective way.

Toshiba's responsibility to Society

Toshiba companies and individuals around the world are making impressive contributions back into our society. Our efforts are further strengthened by a new CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) division that reports directly to the President. We already rank highly for our CSR commitment. For example, we hold the number one spot out of 58 electrical manufacturers in the IntegreX ethical and social rating in Japan. The CSR division will build on this achievement.
More information

We recently announced our participation in the United Nations Global Compact Initiative, an international agreement by major companies supporting nine human rights and environmental principles. By joining this initiative we have demonstrated our determination to integrate the principles not only into our strategy but our company culture and day-to-day operations.
